My name is Esther S. Werneck de Almeida and I am your child's Portuguese teacher this year. I teach two group of students in grades 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th; Portuguese Language Arts (for students who are native speakers) and Portuguese as a Second Language (for students who are learning Portuguese as a Second/Third Language). Because spend time every week with your child teaching him/her the Portuguese language and the Portuguese and Brazilian culture, I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you a few things about myself - both personally and professionally.

I was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where I received my bachelor's degree in 1985. After college, my husband and I came to the United States to pursue Graduate studies. I received my Masters Degree from the University of Hartford - West Hartford, Connecticut, in 1989 and in 1999 I concluded my Doctoral program in the same University. This is my sixteenth year teaching in Bridgeport and also my sixteenth year at Multicultural Magnet School.

I always thought that knowing more than one language and learning about other cultures was an important aspect of every child's education. I also strongly believe that the maintenance of children's first language and the acquisition of knowledge about their own culture should be encouraged. I do practice what I teach with my own children who are fluent in our native language of Portuguese as well as in English and who are also proficient in Spanish, their third language. For that reason, I really enjoy having the opportunity to teach in a classroom where students from diverse backgrounds can interact and share their knowledge and heritage while studying the Portuguese language and Portuguese and Brazilian culture.

I am a parent of three children (two who have already graduated from college and one who is her second year of college) and as a mother and a teacher I strongly believe that parents are the most important people in a child's life and that we must work together for the benefit of our children. Therefore, I like to work with the parents of my students in the same way that I have always expected the teachers of my children to work with me.

Please feel free to communicate with me by writing me a note, or emailing me at -  with any questions or concerns regarding your child's progress. I am also available for individual conferences if you make an appointment in advance to meet with me.
