Make sure your children read or you or someone else reads to them daily. Reading is a skill. Children who spend at least 30 minutes a day reading for fun develop the skills to be better readers at school.

Read aloud to your children. Start reading to them when they are very young. Set aside time each day for reading. Read books that you enjoy.

Give books as gifts. Provide a special place for your children to keep their own library.

Read yourself. When your children see you reading the newspaper or a good book, they will follow your example.

Visit the public library often. Make sure everyone in your family has a library card. Check out the special programs and book talks at the public library.
