BRIDGEPORT -- As they took their seats at the Arena at Harbor Yard to receive their diplomas Monday, the 408 members of Central High School's Class of 2009 were not shy in displaying their excitement.

They did the wave, tossed around a beachball, cheered, shouted, clapped and shared memories of their four years at the city's largest high school.

Salutatorian Victoria Nguyen reminded classmates of the good times at Central: like eating "the best curly fries in the world" in the school cafeteria, the time classes were cancelled for three days because of a broken transformer and the prank mystery perpetrated on freshmen about a supposed pool on the building's third floor.

Valedictorian Alexis Medina told fellow Hilltoppers to be proud of their accomplishments. "When told by a group of strangers that Central was put on [academic] probation our school faced that challenge by becoming one of the most impressive classes Central has ever produced," Medina, the daughter of Board of Education President Maximino Medina Jr., said of the action by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges last fall.

Principal Alejandro Ortiz had 10 real-life tips for success for the Class of 2009, including "live off your parents for as long as you can" and "don't get married too soon."

Supt. of Schools John Ramos also told the students: "Remember these five words: thoughts, actions, habits, lifestyle and destiny," telling them that each is shaped by the one preceding it.
