BRASTEC has been fortunate to partner with Connecticut Sea Grant and Dr. Charles Yarish of the Univeristy of Connecticut in a research project involving the growth of the edible seaweeds Gracilaria and sugar kelp, Saccharina latissima. Our indoor aquaculture lab is used for the intial growth of the seaweeds before they are transplanted to our research farm in Long Island Sound. Our students participate in every aspect of the culture, from isolating the reproductive tissue in the parent seaweeds to deploying the seed string of new individuals at the farm site to the harvest and prep of the final product.
