Katherine M. Chimini
2007 Professional of the Year
CT Affiliate, American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences
Each year the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences/CT Affiliate holds its Spring Meeting which is also known as the second General Membership meeting. It is the occasion when students and professionals throughout the state are recognized for their contributions to the Connecticut organization.

One award given each year is the Professional of the Year. It is given to a member who exemplifies the profession and who has made an outstanding contribution. Members of the CT Affiliate, employers, and community leaders are encouraged to submit applications yearly.

The 2007 Professional of the Year Award recipient is Katherine M.Chimini, a Central High School, Bridgeport, CT Family & Consumer Sciences teacher. This outstanding FCS educator clearly represents the history behind this award. Katherine teaches the Child Care sections at Central and each year turns out several students who continue on in higher education to pursue a career in the Child Development field. She relates well to her students and is very successful in tapping into their learning styles. Her ability to keep current with teaching trends and research in the area, as well as making the contacts in the immediate community speaks to her dedication.
Also, the interest in community outreach is a long standing one. Volunteering has always been a way of life for Katherine and her family members. She has been an advisor for both the Interact Club and the Young Educators Club, for a number of years at Central High School. Getting students out there and involved in the community is positive experience for each and every one of them. Katherine believes that the spirit of giving strengthens the person, gives them purpose and definition. As she states "....it is important to be and stay involved." Activities her student run clubs have supported include various walks, food & clothing drives, support for global concerns such as house building in African countries to name a few.

The CT Affiliate is pleased to present the award to Katherine M. Chimini. To date she has served on the Board in a number of capacities. As current membership chair, her creative ideas and approach have brought in new people to the organization. She has served on the Northeast Regional Meeting planning committee, has been President of the Affiliate and always an avid supporter of the Family & Consumer Sciences field. All of us look forward to continuing to work with Katherine on the Executive Board.
