A message from the Principal...
I would like to introduce myself, Lourdes L. Delgado, the new principal of Thomas Hooker School. During this summer we also transitioned several other staff members including the custodial staff and three teachers. In addition, the district was introduced to a new technology program PowerSchool. PowerSchool is the fastest-growing, most widely used web-based student information system, supporting more than 8.5 million students in 50 states and over 50 countries.

Our dedicated team of teachers and support staff provides a warm, nurturing, and academically challenging experience to almost 500 students in Kindergarten through Grade 8. Thomas Hooker School values continuous improvement and growth for our students as well as our teachers. Our goal in every classroom is that each child be actively engaged in learning both academic concepts and processes that will enable them to become independent learners. We offer a comprehensive curriculum for kindergarten through eighth grade with a strong emphasis on balanced literacy as we provide an environment that motivates students and fosters reading development and positive attitudes towards reading. Our mathematics program supports students in developing their abilities in problem solving, communication, reasoning, and applying mathematical concepts as they learn to apply numeracy to the implementation of assured experiences. Through the lens of scientific inquiry, literacy, and numeracy, the science curriculum engages students in the studies of science and technology in society, life science, earth science, and physical science. The social studies program is grounded in literacy as nonfiction text based on relevant topics is a primary focus. Classroom teachers received continuous professional development and they work closely with special services staff as well as art, music, library-media, and physical education teachers. Instructional decisions reflect the 21st Century Skills that our students need to be successful throughout their academic careers and beyond.
Our Connecticut Mastery Test results are important and the curriculum focuses on the standards students are assessed on annually in March.
We stress the tenets of building a strong community in daily activities throughout Thomas Hooker School. Our Positive Behavior Supports approach focuses on the benefits of a climate of kindness and respect where all community members feel accepted, important, and secure. We recognize that students need to demonstrate appropriate behaviors to ensure learning. We want students to make positive choices at all times, whether or not someone is watching.
The partnership between home and school is one of our highest priorities. Thomas Hooker School is fortunate to have a very involved Parent Advisory Council that sponsors many exciting programs, school and family activities, and volunteer and fundraising efforts throughout the year. The highlight of our parent volunteer program is in-class support for students and teachers.
Thomas Hooker School is a special place, and we thank our community for helping us to maintain our positive school climate. We pledge to continue in our efforts to provide the best possible learning opportunities for our students, to ensure that they are valued members of our community, to encourage them to become good citizens, and to work closely with the entire Bridgeport community for the benefit of our children.
