 Marilyn Taylor, Principal

Greetings Jumoke Academy Parent/Guardian(s):

 It is my pleasure to bring you greetings from our entire faculty and staff and to welcome you to our website as the new principal-select of Jumoke Academy Honors at P.L. Dunbar. I am new to the area from across the county by way of  Louisiana and Georgia. Proudly, I have served as the principal of two turnaround schools prior to becoming the principal at JAH-Dunbar. I have served schools and communities similar to JAH-Dunbar for many years; beginning my teaching career in 1996. I have served large urban systems as an Elementary School Teacher, Title I Director, Assistant Principal and Principal.  I have developed a passion for the work of turnaround leadership and therefore I eagerly accepted this position as a gift of servitude and human-kindness for the students in Bridgeport, CT.

Excitedly, I am pleased to announce the successful partnership of Bridgeport Public Schools and Family Urban Schools of Excellence with the unveiling of Jumoke Academy Honors (JAH) at P.L. Dunbar. As the new principal, I look forward to serving your scholars this year and the years to come as we have lots of changes to implement and several rigorous goals to accomplish.

What’s new at JAH-Dunbar:

  1. A new and superb faculty and staff has been selected from across the country and they all look forward to working with you, the scholars and the community to promote success for all!
  2. Our students are referred to as scholars! Our scholars report to school daily respectful, responsible, and ready to learn.
  3. School uniforms are required every day. (Grades K-5 burgundy polo with the academy logo, khaki pants or skirt (girls), a belt and black shoes) (gym shoes are only permitted on gym days)(Grades 6-8 burgundy blazer, white button down polo shirt, boys-tie, girls-cross-tie, and black shoes)
  4. The school day has been extended for an additional 30 minutes. Our school hours are 8:30am-3:30pm. Half day dismissal is 12:30pm.
  5. Student attendance is monitored daily. We encourage 100% attendance of every classroom!
  6. Classroom instruction is precious time for every scholar. Scholars are released for early check-out prior to 3:00pm with a valid excuse only. Every minute counts!
  7. Scholars who are picked-up after school or who may walk home are released at 3:30pm in the front entryway of the school. Bus riders are released at the rear of the campus (Central Ave.).  Parents/Guardians are not allowed to enter the classroom to pick up scholars for check-out. Classrooms will be called  and the scholar will be escorted to the front lobby area by an Academic Assistant.
  8. An Academic Assistant is assigned to every classroom. The Academic Assistant works as a teacher with our scholars to promote excellence in citizenship, character, and academics.
  9. Breakfast begins promptly at 8:30am-Grades Kindergarten, 7th and 8th  (in their classroom) Grades 1-6 (in the cafeteria at assigned tables)
  10. We will implement the Common Core Standards for grades 3-8 which are considered more rigorous in preparation for college and career readiness.

Wholeheartedly, I would like to thank all parents and guardians for taking this journey with us.  I welcome all opportunities to share the new school model and I can be reached via email at mtaylor@bridgeportedu.net , by phone or by visiting the school Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00-4:00pm.

Together we will make JAH-P. L. Dunbar School the finest school in the State of Connecticut.
